Todos están bienvenidos! All are welcome! Dios es Dios de todos. God is the God of all people. Sin excepciones. No exceptions.
World language learning provides many cognitive and educational benefits to students, and in an increasingly interconnected world sets them on a path to global competence. In our once-a-week classes here at St. Dorothy School we’ll work to develop a solid foundation of beginning Spanish language acquisition, along with an understanding of culture and geography related to el mundo Hispanohablante, the Spanish-speaking world. This type of exploratory language class can motivate our students to want to study language in greater depth at the high school level and beyond, working toward proficiency over time.
Our studies also provide a natural path to a deeper, more personal understanding of Catholic Social Teaching, especially the principle of solidarity. Solidarity is about recognizing all people as our brothers and sisters regardless of our differences. We acknowledge our connected humanity, seek to understand what life is like for each other, and work to build relationships of respect and understanding.
Our fall 2022 project on “La Herencia / Heritage” gave us the opportunity to explore this concept of solidarity. The research for our projects was an outgrowth of our work on Hispanic Heritage Month. In addition to studying some well-known Hispanic Americans, the students researched their own herencia, or heritage. I hoped this would illustrate the diversity of our community, and the fact that most of us (or our families before us) are descendants of immigrants. We compiled a surprisingly extensive list of the countries our students claim as their ancestry.
Pope Francis / Papa Francisco has said, “We need to protect, guide, and encourage our young people, helping them to build a society worthy of their great spiritual and cultural heritage.” In our Spanish classes we celebrate the rich and varied heritage of all our students. We all come from somewhere, carrying the family stories that make us uniquely who we are. And though every story is different, we are all connected.
