May 1, 2025 Dear St. Dorothy Families, “Mary is the mother who patiently and tenderly leads us to God, so that He may untie the knots in our soul.” Pope Francis Please join our school and parish community as we honor Mary in our annual May Procession on Thursday, May 8, 2025. Students in grades 1-8 meet their teachers in their classrooms at 6:40 PM. Kindergarten reports to the gym to their teachers at 6:40 PM. We welcome all parents and families to join us in procession following our 8th grade into church or meet us in church. The side pew wings are open and the last few pews on each side. It is a beautiful night to come together to honor, Mary, our Mother. Please see the dress code from each teacher as it is different for some grades. Students may dress down on Friday, May 9th for $1.00. All money will go to support our annual Spirit Day taking place at Stewart Field this June. More information to follow. “Let the Children Come to Me” (Matthew 19:14) there is no better way to express how Jesus feels for our second graders and all first communicants who are receiving Him in the sacrament of Holy Communion this weekend on Saturday, May 3rd. Please keep them in your prayers as they enter into their second sacrament of Initiation, which allows them to receive our Lord’s grace as often as they desire. Congratulations to all of our First Communicants! First and Second grade will have their class Mass on Sunday, May 18th at 9:30 AM. We hope you are able to join together for this special Mass. "During the season of Lent our students and staff practiced almsgiving by donating snacks and sports drinks from their lunches to Hoops 4 Hope (H4H), a Philly non-profit that runs a basketball league for men and women living in homeless shelters. Leo Porth, St. Dorothy Class of 2005, volunteers as vice president of H4H. He sends his gratitude for our school and parish community's generosity in supporting H4H's mission of creating a space for men and women experiencing homelessness to not only hoop, but to have fun and feel at home and cared for. We'll continue accepting donations of healthy packaged snacks and sports drinks through the end of May. A donation box will be available in the cafeteria." Grateful to all who participated! We do hope students in grades K-4 have called to invite their grandparent/s to our Grandparent’s Day celebration taking place in their honor on Thursday May 1st at 8:30 AM. Doors open at 8:20 AM for coffee and refreshments. Students perform at 8:45 AM. We welcome a special family member if a child’s grandparent is not able to attend. As the end of this school year rapidly approaches, Mrs. Gordon is preparing our transportation needs for next year. If your child/children will require bus transportation for the 2025-2026 school year, you must complete the Bus Transportation Request form, regardless of whether or not they rode a bus this year. We are required to notify each school district of their bus riders each year. If we do not receive a completed form, your child can not be put on a bus for next year. Please complete the form and return by Friday May 16th via either hard copy or email to Mrs. Gordon at jgordon@stdots.com. Please check with your public school district to see if they require registration with them and reach out to them regarding bus route numbers, times and stop locations if you don’t hear from them by late August.
Good luck to our Reading Olympic teams as they compete on Monday, May 12th at St. Annies! Thank you to the teachers and parents that work with them throughout the year for this special day. They always make us proud! Good luck, readers! As you have heard from Home and School weekly emails your support of the many fundraisers has provided so much for our classrooms, students and teachers, thank you! I take this time to thank our Home and School Board (Mrs. Carafides, Mrs. Tripiciano, Mrs. Davenport, Mrs. Amalfitano and Mrs. Russo) for your continuous sacrifice of time and talent. A special thank you to Mrs. Carafides, who is now steeping down, from her two terms of service; thank you for all of your hard work and efforts. Our teachers and students are grateful for each one of you! Our Band will perform their Spring Concert on Tuesday, May 20th. This will take place during the day for our school children and at 6:30 PM for parents and families. Please mark your calendars. More information will be forthcoming from Mr. Banks. School will be closed on Friday, May 23rd and Monday, May 26th for Memorial Day weekend. I hope you and your families enjoy this long weekend. When students return they will be preparing to take final assessments. May 29th, Ascension Thursday, a holy day of obligation, school will be closed. Masses are 7:00 and 10:00 AM and 7:00PM. Archdiocesan Final Assessments run May 30th to June 6th. Please look for more information from your teachers towards the end of May. We thank you in advance for not scheduling appointments these mornings. Students will receive a schedule. Students are taught study skills throughout the year, one of the most important lessons to be learned. Hopefully they have been taking good notes and making study cards. A good night’s sleep and healthy breakfast is always recommended. In planning ahead, please note the Kindergarten and Pre School closing ceremonies are Thursday, June 5th and Friday, June 6th. Please look to your teacher communications for more detail. And lastly, although we have not published our calendar for next year, I can share our school year will begin on Wednesday, September 3, 2025. Friday, September 5th will be a ½ day of school. I hope this allows you to plan your summer break accordingly. Sincerely, Karen Tomasetti Principal Live Each Day Giving Witness to Christ.
