Advance Mathematics is offered to students in grades 5-8. This teacher and principal selected group will be challenged to delve deeper into the curriculum through skills and logic. At the end of eighth grade these students will have completed a full Algebra I curriculum and prepared to take the High School honors placement test.
In preparing our classes for next year with Advanced Mathematics placement, students are given a test of Mathematic skills at the end of fourth grade. The time needed and accuracy accomplished for this test are taken into consideration. Teacher recommendations along with test results, Math Terra Nova scores, Terra Nova CSI scores, and final Math report card grades are taken into consideration. As advised by the Advanced Mathematics program we look for students who also meet the following character traits to make a sound decision in our selection: attendance, ability to work at a rigorous pace, self monitoring, self motivation and discipline, organizational skills, and the ability to work on task without cause for disruption.
Students accepted into this class will work at an advanced pace. They are expected to always be prepared, homework complete and be able to keep up with the work. The goal is to challenge and advance the students in their studies through the year. If a student is placed on a watch list we continue to watch during the following year or years and make a decision on their placement for the future. It is possible to move in or out based on the student's ability to meet these expectations.Letters for acceptance are sent home with the final report card in June. All students are accepted upon a probationary status.
